I'...I think this is a really interesting point. I'm sure a lot of people have noticed that Gygaxian planes are different than planets, but I (at least) hadn't really made a distinction between "conceptual planes" and Gygaxian ones.

One thing you point out, and I wonder how much of a source of trouble it is, is that "planes" in rpgs are BOTH background elements of the fictional cosmology AND places where you can supposedly go on adventures. I wonder if trying to force these things to wear those two hats maybe makes it harder for them to function as viable adventure sites.

(Over-dedication to systematizing your background cosmology is arguably a problem in its own right. In the 3rd edition "Manual of Planes" I swear there's a section where it tells you which spells you're required to remove from your spell lists if you decide NOT to include this or that plane in your campaign setting.)Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15493700749333105771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302487761596456689.post-8499911919062285682019-04-08T18:48:04.160-04:002019-04-08T18:48:04.160-04:00Good points! Kirby's less populated Negative Zone has a closer resemblance, at least at first to Ditko surrealscapes.Treyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04647628467658839351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302487761596456689.post-78837822589265058312019-04-08T14:57:49.550-04:002019-04-08T14:57:49.550-04:00Heavy ordnance. I'd never seen the influence before between the Gygaxian symbol scapes and the dark dimensions Thor or Dr. Strange would visit on the page . . . that one is like a new continent to explore. I wonder how much of it depends on population, with somewhere like Kirby Asgard being an obvious world complete with dynamic politics whereas Ditko realms are prettier but static. Eternity is his own plane with a population of at best one.bombasticushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09570356997079883076noreply@blogger.com
