In Doom's Wake
My girlfriend's gaming group is interested in giving 5th edition a whirl, so I agreed to run a game for them. I don't know if I'll be able to get it finished in time, but I've love to run an adventure idea I've had some some time (and used part of in my Weird Adventures campaign). It involves an unusual gang of pirates marauding coastal villages. The pirate's have a small fotilla, a bit like a miniature version of Armada in China Mieville's The Scar, but embedded in a drifting mass of seaweed and mist like in William Hope Hodgson Sargasso Sea story.
At the center of floating mass is main pirate ship, the massive Doom's Wake:
It is home (or at least throne-room) for the monstrous witch-mother of the inbred pirate family--a crew like a combination of The Hills Have Eyes/Sawney Bean clan and Shadow Over Innsmouth.
That's the basic I think the location itself will provide some interest challenges, plus the pirates and various seaweed-lurking monsters.

I really like this idea. I'd love to see a fleshed out version. Something like this has a home in the new world that I have swirling around in my head.
Thanks, Jon! There probably will be more on this soon.
This does sound good. Let me know how you like Weird Adventures using 5E. I've kinda stalled out on it. 5E, not Weird Adventures.
I haven't actually played Weird Adventures in 5e. I was playing it in WaRP still.
Sounds awesome! "Monstrous witch-mother of the inbred pirate family" is definitely a winner as far as baddies go!
Thanks for mentioning The Hills Have Eyes. Now I'm going to have nightmares. God, that movie freaks me out. Okay, enough of my drama. I think the nautical theme is going to be great. Keep us posted on how the game goes. :)
Intriguing indeed. Lots of potential there. And there would be a whole parasite economy trading with the flotilla, slavers, pirates, smugglers and other low life.
That should be an fun (and scary) adventure for them!
It would also make a good premise for a novella.
My players never liked my "Sea" adventures.... a tentacle or worse could just pop out of the water and snatch up a henchman.... the "Surprise" aspect would get to them.... I would just say "roll me a 20-sided..." just to keep them panicked and wondering what new horror they were to face... really kept them on their guard....
the top image is from the late 60's film "The Lost Continent"...
.... sounds like a great "Adventuring World" that you made for this game.... ( we made a place like this in the sea... my players made sure to "avoid" it ..
Have a great day good Sir...
Thanks! You too.
Boats of the Glen Carrig is a great story, and all the other bits just make this sound incredibly gameable and loads of fun.
