I'm getting ready to start my Planet of the Apes hexcrawl so I prepared a document outlining the mission that brings the PC astronauts to the ape-ruled future. Following the ideas in my initial pitch, there are easter eggs linking to other 70s sci-fi shows:
heh, looks great Trey.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tim.
ReplyDeleteThe first line of the document reads NASA - I believe you meant to keep the ANSA? Or are they competing organizations?
ReplyDeleteI'm using them as quasi-competing entities. ANSA is more of the military/secret projects entity.

ReplyDeleteAt some point I really want to shake out a similar idea I had for a game setting.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the interesting part of the PotA movies was always the first twenty minutes or so. my idea would involve, like yours, missions put together with future knowledge due to returning missions having been affected by some sort of space/time anomaly. The assumption is that your mission may not return to its own time, either, but that trajectories through the anomaly are mappable and (maybe) repeatable.
Cue monster/planet/omniscient energy cloud of the week style adventures. This would probably be more suited to using something like Traveller or OtE than D&D, with inspirations including Space: 1999, The Black Hole, Six Million Dollar Man, and so forth. I suppose Stars Without Number would probably work okay. Hm.
That's great! Sort of like Star Trek made from other sci-fi tv shows.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Using technology slightly more contemporary with the realities of the 70s. Not too close, though, because that's no fun. Plus the time shenanigans allow the possibility of recruiting psi mutants or ape-o-nauts or whatever to augment your small crew of steely eyed missile men and bleeding heart mission specialists. (Or whatever the PCs end up being).
