Any Requests?


Maybe it's because I'm in spitting distance of 600 posts and people have had time to digested Weird Adventures (and if you haven't, check out Booberry's review), or maybe it's just because it's Friday and I'm lazy, but I'm inclined to take suggestions for future posts.  So if you've got questions (burning or otherwise) you want answered about the City or the Strange New World, or some hint from a precious post you want me to expand upon, now's your chance to ask.  I won't necessarily do a post on every suggestion, but any I get will form my list for consideration when it's time to revisit the City. 

Here's some things I've thought about--but don't feel bound to this list.  It might be worth revisiting the (mis)adventures of Cap'n Clanton in the South Tranquil Sea.  There's also the Old World east of Staark as yet unchronicled.  There's always room for more famous adventurers of yesteryear. 

So that's what I've got. Anything from the audience?

  1. How about something about weapons, such as firearms and the companies that made them? A Weird Adventures version of Smith & Weston?

    Of course, now you'll tell me you've already done that and I haven't seen it. If so, ignore that, and spin me a tale about the lands across the sea.

  3. I should think Winchester would make a good starting point for a SNW arms manufacturer, and come to think of it, Nick Cage's character in God of War.

    For my own part I may have my hiatus to blame, or just my lack of attention, but I feel I know far too little about the subway system, if there indeed is one.

  4. @Lurker - Well, Valentine's Day is coming up...

    @Harald - The subway lines and some stuff about stations gets coverage in Weird Adventures (as you'll find out) but there are probably some weird tidbits to address here. I've had an idea along those lines that I never have used here nor used in WA.

  7. Oh, about guns -- I'm trying to find a post about how guns are controlled, and how prevalent sword-wielding is as an alternative.

  8. I haven't written a gun control post, but I can probably hit on that. As to the use of melee weapons I touch on that a bit in this post.

    I'd love to read some celebrity scandal from Heliotrope.

    Does Weird Adventures have a version of Acme? Or a Sear & Roebuck for Adventuring types?

    What's really going on behind the scenes at Djinn Cigarettes? People are saying the company had something to do with that Efreet rampage in 5883.

  11. What kind of inspirations and/or muses do you use for your creative process? Is there any routine that you find yourself doing in order to get your creative juices flowing?

  12. While I've not ordered Weird Adventures yet (though I've not closed the order page either!) I would love to see more on the world in general, rather then random artifacts and snippits. I loved the Monster Canyon post (The one that got me reading your blog) and the one about the Black Dust Elementals. More stuff like that.

  13. @Canageek - Weird Adventures definitely has the sort of stuff you're looking for, I think, but I can cover some things like that here.

    @Mike - I think I can answer that a bit right here. I get inspiration from a whole lot of media--an image I see scouring tumblr, a comic or story I read. Often the kernel of inspiration is a little Fortean tidbit or some obscure bit of history that I then warp. It often comes as kind of a question (e.g. "what would tax collectors that had to contend with magic and adventurers be like?") Then, it's got to percolate a bit to get the proper spin. Like yesterday: I wanted to write a post on Jarus Shancks (who I'd mentioned on the blog and in the book) and I had to make sense of the fact I'd thrown out that his head "existed partial in another plane." Thinking on what the hell I meant by that and how that works gave me the post.

    I find you've got to actively work on ideas. If you sit there and think it will emerge fully formed that doesn't happen with regularity. "I've got a post to write for tomorrow, what is it about?" concentrates the mind much better.

  14. I'm guessing you've already covered it, but have you posted about what game systems your setting would work best with?

  15. @George - I actually haven't--primarily because (as Booberry points out in his review linked above) you could really use any system. Spell references are to the d20 SRD and the monsters are statted in an SRD-based but "old school" way. That's really just to give things context and proportion. I think it's totally adaptable to any system based on your preferences and what type of game you enjoy: low-powered and deadly, over-the-top and heroic, etc.

  16. The alternative SpellJammer Campaign & perhaps some monsters for it.
    How about some more lower level monsters for the city?
    A bit more on the high seas of your world, & cover the 'Russia" version of the world of the City.
    Guns & weapons are great but some more of the myths of your world add more flavor to it.

  17. The Alt-Spelljammer idea is separate from the WA stuff, but it is something I intend to continue, so thanks for the vote of interest!

    It's funny you should mention "Russia" because I've had a post percolating on that for a bit. Expect to see that soon.

    It's an interesting thing what parts of things different people gravitate towards. I'm going to try to keep things balance. Even guns have myths. :)

  18. First, I have to place another vote for your Alt-Spelljammer setting.
    As for the City, how about a post about vigilantes? Given the pulp feel of the setting, characters like the Avenger or the Spider would definitely fit in between the weirdness of the City.

  23. How about underground fighting competitions, bare knuckles matches, maybe illegal bloodsports or boxing? Or even what kinds of racing goes on--horses, dogs, monsters? Who bets on this stuff? Who runs the rackets? whose the big bosses of this sort of thing? That'd be interesting, and have a ton of possible adventures threading all through it.
