Spells Against Civility Progress Report

Jason and I are still working on our 2-page comic for the first issue of the Swords Against! Sword & Sorcery anthology. Jason sent me the inked first page so I could start laying out the lettering, and that's what the images here are from, though there is a still some clean-up and shadowing to come on the art.

This is how it starts with the barbarian Karkath:

And this is how it ends for him:

The statue/idol thing over the entrance is an homage to some old Ditko art, right? Doctor Strange, maybe? Naggingly familiar but I can't quite place it.

I'll have to ask Jason if there was any particular inspiration.

Maybe I'm imagining it after all. Digging a little I found the image it was reminding me of - a cyclopean many-armed guardian statue/golem protecting the Domain of Dread Dormammu - but the actual resemblance isn't as strong as I thought.

You can see a long shot of the thing at the first url, and it going into action in the second. Maybe it's the juxtaposition of the two images in the post that's doing it. The big squashing fist in the second one has suggestions of the Ditko design (three fingers, a hint of "brickwork" elements in the detailing lines), but I'm not even sure that's connected to the head watching over the door, which doesn't have the obvious arms Ditko's does.

Still, way worse things than reminding someone of Ditko, that man really knew how to draw. Love the way he keeps visually invoking the number six there - a single hexagonal eye as a focal point, six arms, and even teh doors are an irregular hexagon that also hints at a coffin shape just to be extra ominous.
